How long after a burial can we place a memorial?
One of the most important aspects of installation is ensuring the grave space is stable and the ground has settled sufficiently. As a general guide, a settling period of around 12 months is often required following a burial, though this can vary with ground conditions. Every grave is carefully assessed and ground checks carried out before fitting.
When should we order a memorial?
Choosing a memorial is a deeply personal decision. There is no set timetable — the best advice is to begin the process when you feel ready. Every family grieves differently, and it is important you have the time and space to consider the options without feeling rushed.
How long does it take to create a memorial?
Typically from six weeks to six months, depending on the style and specification. Many standard designs are readily available from stock for a shorter timescale; bespoke memorials are individually crafted to order, often sourced directly from specialist quarries overseas. We always provide guidance on lead times at the point of order.
How much does a memorial cost?
Memorials suit a range of budgets — standard headstones typically start from around £1,000 and kerb set memorials from approximately £3,000. Smaller items such as vases and tablets generally range from £250 to £800. Most local authorities and churchyards also charge fees, which Eden Memorials will handle on your behalf. We usually require a 50% deposit to confirm an order, with the balance due before installation.
Why is there a council fee payable?
A memorial application must be submitted for each new installation. The relevant authority reviews it to ensure the memorial meets all regulations and safety standards, and checks the request is from the registered deed holder. The grave space is then accurately marked. As part of our service, Eden Memorials manages the entire application process on your behalf.
What if we want something different?
Creating bespoke memorials is at the heart of what we do. Working closely with you, we can create a completely individual memorial in a wide range of shapes, sizes, colours and materials — incorporating personal features, symbols, artwork and inscriptions that reflect the life and character of the person being remembered.
What type of memorial should I choose?
Almost any shape and style can be created, in a wide range of colours and stones. Memorials are generally produced in granite for its durability — largely from India or China, with unique variations from Finland and South Africa. We also work in slate, Italian Carrara marble, sandstone and Yorkstone. Our team can advise on size, style and stone, and on any cemetery restrictions.
What size memorial should I order?
We can advise on the specific regulations for your chosen cemetery — including maximum dimensions, thickness, permitted finishes and any restrictions on kerbs, chippings or accessories — and guide you through the full process so the finished memorial feels both personal and appropriate for its setting.
Do you offer home visits and out-of-hours appointments?
Yes. If you find it difficult to come to the showroom, or would prefer to discuss a memorial in the privacy of your own home, one of our team can arrange a home visit and bring along a selection of brochures. We are also happy to meet outside our usual office hours — please contact us to arrange.
How do I know the memorial is fitted to the appropriate standard?
As members of BRAMM (British Register of Accredited Memorial Masons), all our fixers are qualified to NVQ level. Memorials are fitted to the standards set out in the industry code of working practice using stainless steel dowels and accredited ground anchors. Our work is routinely inspected after fitting, and we give a 10-year guarantee on all workmanship.
Do I need to be there when a memorial is fitted?
No. We work closely with local authorities, parishes and councils to ensure every memorial is installed in full accordance with the regulations and positioning requirements of each cemetery. On your behalf we prepare and submit all applications and plans; designated officers then identify and mark the grave location for accurate alignment.
Can I insure the memorial?
Yes. Memorial insurance policies provide comprehensive protection against accidental damage, vandalism, subsidence and other unforeseen events. Specialist insurers offer all-risks cover, ensuring the cost of repairs is included for incidents such as damage from lawnmowers, vandalism, falling trees or ground movement.
